TRIBUTE TO DR. JACK TAUNTON

We are saddened greatly by the passing of our friend, mentor, and leader, Dr. Jack Taunton. Dr. Taunton was a visionary and world leader in sport and exercise medicine whose influence extended far beyond the clinics, classrooms, and events he so generously served. His unwavering commitment to evidence-based best practice, athlete health, and inclusive participation helped shape modern approaches to physical activity and exercise screening, injury prevention, and medical support in sport. He was an instrumental part of the PAR-Q+ Collaboration since its inception providing sage advice and helping navigate the international nuances of the medical clearance process for all individuals across the lifespan including athletes and those living with medical conditions. Every version of the PAR-Q+ and ePARmed-X+ has incorporated the advice of Dr. Taunton and his medical teams.

As a mentor, collaborator, and advocate, Dr. Taunton brought clarity, humility, and purpose to every project he touched. He believed deeply that rigorous science and compassionate care were not opposing ideals, but essential partners. His leadership of medical teams at various provincial, national, and international levels (such as the Vancouver Sun Run, the Vancouver Marathon, the Olympic Games, and the Invictus Games) reflected this philosophy and set a standard of excellence that will continue to guide future generations of clinicians and researchers.

Jack’s legacy lives on through the countless professionals he inspired, the systems he helped build, and the enduring impact of his work on athlete safety and well-being. He will be remembered not only for his remarkable contributions to sport medicine, but for his kindness, integrity, and steadfast dedication to improving the lives of others through physical activity and exercise. We will miss him dearly.
